Special notes:

Please, take a moment to thank those who donated to the auction as you patronize their businesses a donor list is at the end of the newsletter.  Keep it handy as a reminder of those businesses and people that generously donated.

 

Bamboo Rod Raffle!  KVCTU will sell only 100 tickets for a 7-foot, two-piece, 2-tip 4-wt cane rod made by Andy Klys, a Canadian rodmaker well known to the rodmaking world for his skill and craftsmanship.  A blond rod accented with black tipping on the wraps and a black reel seat, and accompanied by a hexagonal wooden case of fiddleback maple, this small stream rod casts well from 15 to 40 feet.  Tickets are $10 each and available from the Directors.

1) Call to Order:

2) Minutes of the previous meeting:

- April expenses at $ 4,311.63, income  $15,287.68, working capital $16,796.38       

 

4) State Council update: 

Wednesday, May 21st meeting (two a year) at the Sidney IFW Office at 7pm

 

5) National update: 

New England Meeting - Saturday (May 3): Greg Ponte presented on the Maine TU Trout Camp. Vermont TU wants to come to the camp to look at doing one with Orvis like we do with Beans and NY does with Cortland   Solicitations from TU National were a point of concern, as was the TU National web site (note: it will have a children's interactive web site within the present web site)

 

6) Committee reports / updates:

NOTE:  The Chapter Outing will be held immediately following the Trout Camp at Evergreen Camps in Solon.  Highlights will include the great camaraderie, a chicken barbeque (pay your own) on Saturday night, and a group float and fish on the Kennebec from Evergreens to North Anson.  Families are more than welcome, and anyone interested should contact Evergreens directly to reserve a cabin, tent site or RV space.

 

 

Newsletter - Committee Mike Holt               

Target dates: summary to Mike by May 12, distributed by 17th week of May

 

Casting Contest:

Mike needs a couple people the day before to set up the pool, as well help the day of  (David Hedrick and Mike Haskell - setup; Jimmy Thibodeau and Dan Marra).  Tent that morning - George Viles.   See Mike if you'd like to volunteer.... its a fun fund raiser June 7th!

 

Healing Waters - Dave Hedrick

Registration of 13 Maine TU members as scheduled volunteers is now in progress.  The bureaucracy encountered in this process has demonstrated that the program would not have gone forward at Togas VAMC were it not for the commitment and tenacity of Togas Recreation Therapist Terisa Olsen. 

 

First outing of the year for the Togas Vets will be to Gardiner Public Landing for Alewife fishing from, 5pm until dark on May 28th:

Atlantic Salmon Federation - David Van Burgel/ Kathy Scott

 

Thick plastic identification signs for Sandy River Atlantic salmon signs have been ordered as well as posts (note: signs are now in).

 

Fry stocking in Sheepscot this week if possible, fry traps much later 

 

Summer meeting will be held on June 28th

 

Maine ASF Council committed $20,000 to Penobscot dam deconstruction  as part of the Restoration Project(combined with the 3 Atlantic salmon clubs= $100,000 commitment)

Halifax hearing on the appeals – ongoing

 

Downeast article by Jeff Clark circulated "The Dam That Wouldn't Leave"  (June issue)

 

Temperature logger - DMR is loaning us eight (6 from Paul Christman to go with 2 from Scott Davis)... we'll put two above and four below, as suggested by Jeff Reardon.  Will measure from May to September, recording every half hour. 

Resource restoration, grants, etc. continued…

Mike Holt will coordinate (with Kathy Scott and David Van Burgel) A Kennebec County Sheriff certified diver will put them in.  We're looking at thermal conditions in the river so that we might be able to address that over the longer term as an important component of habitat health.

 

Other Business

Auction update - Thanks so much to everyone who helped, who donated, and who participated.  The banquet income: $14,406.25 with a couple small bills yet... two items not collected yet/ income yet to come in.  We will have net proceeds of over $12,000 - our best total in years.  This will help provide great support to programs for the upcoming year.  

 

Alewife Festival  - all set!  We might want to bring water and snack bars up to $50 (moved and approved) for Bruce Bowman to purchase supplies.  Publicity - Dave Hedrick will put in the paper (ask Travis Barrett).  Posters will be e-mailed to Directors; please post the poster everywhere you can!!!  Urge your friends to come.  (Side note: that day, Irving will donate 5 cents of every gallon to the Special Olympics.)  Draft posters approved - add what else will be there?

 

Add to poster:  Displays and information booths   Bruce will e-mail people to be there when... tent set up, etc

 

          Datis Award

We have one painting By Jim Camann. He has given us permission to make prints for the award. When we're received Abbott's work, we will be able to make 10 of this and 10 of Abbott's work for 20 years of awards.  Each print will be framed with a recognition plaque and high quality print.  Committee needs to come up with a draft nomination form by the Sept Board Meeting for review by the Directors.  By the October meeting, the Directors will approve a final draft.

 

          Women's Day

No confirmation on an available August date, but July 12th is free... also, can we help with clean up the beavers' felled poplars at the Ponds?  Seven of the Directors are busy on July 12th.  Bruce will talk with Rainbow Valley as an alternative site.

 

Special Olympics June 7 Summer Games University of Maine (tying) Contact Bruce Bowman 10am to 3 pm

We reviewed a draft of the tickets; the drawing date will be Saturday night at the outing June 28th IF all of the 100 maximum at $10 tickets are sold.

Carl will get the tickets printed up.  We will put a description of the rod and the raffle in the newsletter.
